CL, CEPCI
4 Identification/ development of value added Products from cashew kernels, utilization of by-products
  • Production of enzymes from by-product of cashew industry was carried out. The methods were standardized for the large scale production of enzymes such as cellulase, pectinase from cashew nut shell and tannase from cashew husk using microorganism viz Aspergillus Niger. The patent application for protocol for production of Cellulase, pectinase and Tannase was submitted through NRDC.
  • Bioremediation of CNSL and waste water of cashew industry was done by employing microbes. The patent application for bioremediation technique using microbes was submitted for patenting through NRDC.
  • Developed polymerized products from Cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) and Residol and the technology was submitted for patenting through NRDC
CL, CEPCI
5 Packaging standardization, evaluation and promotion of developed technologies, qualitycertification and entrepreneurship development
  • Conducted seminar on Hygienic practices in factories in tie up with KSCDC
  • Organised training programme for middle level managers of the processing units on storage management protocols for raw cashew nut
  • Organized advanced training for staff of administrative department and scientists on export oriented office maintenance of a quality assurance laboratory
CL, CEPCI
6 To develop standards and storage management for raw cashewnut
  • Physical characteristics of raw cashewnuts in relation to quality were determined for selected domestic and imported nuts.
  • Identified various physical parameters to assess quality of raw cashewnuts which influences the price.
  • A concentric drum type rotary sieve grader for raw cashewnuts has been designed and developed.
  • Drying characteristics of raw cashewnuts in thin layer drying is determined.
  • Moisture sorption isotherm for raw cashewnuts is developed and being analysed for demarcating bound and free moisture towards safer storage.CPI, DCR

7 To develop high performance cashew processing system
  • Energy budgeting cashew industries has been worked out for different regions.
  • Various energy requirement in two different mode of processing at various stages are compared.
  • Performance of steam assisted unpeeled kernel dryer is evaluated for rate of drying and effective peeling.
  • Brick walled unpeeled cashew kernel dryer is evaluated for its performance and compared with advanced technique of steam assisted dryer.
  • Comparative performance of mechanized peeling machines viz., brush type peeling machine, abrasive & pneumatic type, CTP – imported impact & shear type are evaluated.
  • Peeling efficiency, whole kernel recovery, cost of the machine, floor space requirement and power requirement of the mechanized peeling machines are compared.
CPI, DCR
